Your baby’s school Journey

Can you imagine your newborn baby catching the bus? By the time your infant reaches school, he or she will be walking, cycling or taking a bus to school most days.

By the year 2010, the new School Travel Advisory Group hopes to see a return to the mid-1980s level of walking, cycling and bus use. Plans are being drawn up to see an end to the ‘school run’ for parents, particularly when each car is often dropping off only one child.

Recommendations in a report presented to Transport Minister Keith Hill include:

  • better travel facilities at schools
  • more affordable transport to schools
  • more road safety education for children
  • better training for bus drivers.

The aims would mean 80% of primary schoolchildren walking, cycling or taking the bus
(63% now) and 90% of secondary schoolchildren (79% now).

At the moment, one in five cars on the road at 8.50am are taking children to school
