POP star Madonna has given birth three weeks early to her second child, a baby boy named Rocco Ritchie.
The child, her first with British film director Guy Ritchie, was born on at 1252 GMT on Friday 11 August, weighing 5lb 9oz, at Los Angeles’ Cedars Sinai hospital.
The singer was rushed to the hospital suffering from abdominal pains and losing blood. An emergency Caesarean section was performed because she had a detached placenta.
Madonna’s publicist, Liz Rosenberg, refused to confirm whether the new mum was still in hospital but said: “Madonna is overjoyed. She is safe, as is little Rocco. Guy and Lourdes are by her side.”
The news of Rocco’s birth comes just 24 hours after Madonna criticised British NHS hospitals as as old and Victorian.
