Baby for Kate Winslet

HOLY Smoke and Titanic actress Kate Winslet has given birth to a girl – and named her Mia.

Kate, 25, and husband Jim Threapleton, 26, had drawn up a list of 10 names, but none of them fitted their daughter when she arrived, at 5.40am on Thursday.

They finally decided on Mia, which means mine, and is Italian. She weighs 8lb 9oz and was born in London.

Kate’s spokesman said: “Kate and Jim had drawn up a list of 10 names, but when the baby was born, none of them seemed right. Then Mia came to them, and it just seemed right. There was no family significance, they just thought it was a really beautiful name.”

The actress is due to return home with her new daughter today.

She is planning to take a seven-month career break to be with Mia, having decided even before announcing her pregnancy that a happy family was more important than stardom.

She did stay busy during the pregnancy; filming Enigma, based on the bestseller by Robert Harris and house-hunting for new homes in Cornwall and London.
