THIS MONTH’S FAVE RAVE:
What would we do without Missus Mac?, by Gus Clarke
If
you’ve ever helped out in your child’s nursery or
pre-school, you’ll recognise the range of practical duties
and emotional support that are needed, simultaneously, by so
many children. The text of this book has a good rhythm
without resorting to an over-tight rhyme, and there are some
lovely observations: Missus Mac is ‘always there when you
need her most’ (picture of boy on loo being handed new
toilet roll), ‘to put things together’ (picture of girl
sitting on bench outside having plasters stuck on her hurt
knees and Missus Mac using a spare plaster to repair the girl’s
glasses), ‘or keep them apart’ (picture of two children
fighting).Published by Anderson, £4.99

HONOURABLE MENTION:
My First Book of Numbers, by Kim Deegan
This
stylish book isn’t a formal introduction to counting (the
best way of introducing counting is to go from one to ten, not
backwards), but has a refreshing approach.A baby is shown in the first image
throwing a ball to knock down ten skittles, and a big blue
number 10 fills the opposite page. Lots of familiar play
scenarios follow, until we reach number one, where Mum comes
in and discovers ‘one big… mess!’Published by Bloomsbury, £7.99
