Tips on how to decorate a nursery for your baby
Pictures on the walls can add interest to even the smallest bedroom. Cheap picture frames can be transformed with a coat of paint while pictures can be anything from framed greeting cards (perhaps a collage of birth announcement cards) to images taken from
books. Some parents frame photographs of themselves for the baby to look at.
Friezes are a way of introducing colour and decoration to walls, and if you
choose one that features numbers or letters of the alphabet, it can help children learn
later on.
Wall hangings are another way of adding colour to the nursery and can have
educational value too. These can be anything from posters to appliqued fabric shapes which
give a three-dimensional effect. Wall hangings have the added bonus of being easily
removed when your child has outgrown them. Once your baby is standing, a height chart on
the wall adds decoration and is a fun way of recording how quickly he is growing.
A wall clock is a practical addition to the nursery for feeding and bedtime
rituals. Check that the ticking isn’t too loud though as some children dislike the
sound in a quiet bedroom. A clock with large numerals can be used later for teaching how
to tell the time. Smaller bedside table clocks come in a variety of styles designed to
appeal to children.
A nursery thermometer is reassuring for parents of a young baby. Most come in
colourful designs or feature nursery characters. Remember not to position it near a
radiator or the reading will be inaccurate.
Socket covers These white plastic inserts with three prongs are essential in the
nursery and in other areas of the house once your child is on the move, particularly in
low level sockets. Plug-in nightlights also provide safe covers for sockets.
