Baby books: 12 – 18 months : Alfie

Alfie Gets in First, by Shirley Hughes; audio cassette narrated by Thora Hird

This book and audio tape come in a sturdy cardboard pack that can
be closed up and stored on a shelf.Alfie wants to be first at everything.
He races ahead of his mother and sister on a trip out, but by
mistake closes the door when they arrive home, leaving him on
one side and his mother and sister on the other. After many
tears, and most of the neighbours pitching in to help, Alfie
sorts out the problem by himself.Cleverly, while the story text is
describing in great detail what’s happening out on the
doorstep, the illustrations tell us what is happening inside
with Alfie.

The tape is about eight minutes long, and the storyteller is the inimitable Thora Hird, who
gives a lovely deadpan delivery.

Mother of an 18-month-old comments: ”I’ve always liked Thora Hird. It’s good having this
tape on in the car – it makes a change from nursery rhymes when we’re out and about.”
