Baby books: 6 – 12 months : Cat Flap

Cat Flap, by Susan Cony

Here’s
a zippy, snazzy board book with shaped edges that shows the
kind of exuberant house décor you may enjoy seeing inside a
book, and not necessarily on someone’s walls. There’s chaos in the house when Mabel
is trying to find a cosy place to snuggle up with her toy Ted.
Each room shows a disaster about to happen – for example the
kitchen floor is sticky due to a messy cat-cook’s
clumsiness. Each time Mabel looks for a new place to go, open
the cut-out flap in the page to take her through to another
room.

There’s a companion board book called Dog
House
that’s well worth a look at, too.

Mum of an eight-month-old comments:
“The bright pictures and happy, colourful settings put me
in a good mood, which helps my son feel happy too I
guess.”

Baby loves hugs and kisses,
by Michael Lawrence, illustrations by Adrian Reynolds

This
is a lively story about a baby who likes to give and receive
kisses and hugs whenever he can. And everyone in his family
has a different style. Mummy’s hugs are great big enormous
ones, while Daddy’s kisses are ‘slippy-sloppy’ and
noisy. Problems arise when Baby wants to give his own kisses,
resulting in an upset sister and kitten, because he hasn’t
learnt how to be gentle yet. At the end Baby is shown enjoying
the best kisses and hugs of all – the sleepytime variety.Published by Dorling Kindersley, £3.99
