How Big is a Pig?, by Clare Beaton
Clare Beaton has painstakingly cut out and sewn felt fabric into scene around a farm, with a rhyming story linking them together. The pig in the title meets cows and dogs and hens and frogs, and we are asked to compare their size with the size of the pig. In addition to the images of the main animals, there are lots of insects to look out for that often incorporate sewn-on beads, giving them an authentic sheen (perfect for squeamish mums and dads). The biggest pig of all, in case you wondered, is mummy pig, and the little pig runs to suckle at her side on the last page.

Little Oops!, by Colin McNaughton
Here’s the
best of the latest board books starring Preston Pig and a marauding
wolf – the duo that has appeared in several previous adventures.
Preston Pig, in true comic strip style, foils the wolf’s first
attempt to eat him by throwing down an obligatory banana skin. This
works – ‘Oops!’ exclaims the tottering wolf. Preston Pig loses out
on the next page, but in the following encounter shows great
initiative, creating the funniest encounter of all. The wolf has
Preston Pig in his sights, the intended victim bends down to smell a
flower, and the assailant sails right over: ‘Oops a daisy!’
Dad of a 10- month-old comments: “I like this book because there’s
lots of action. I put in lots of sound effects right through.”
