A new network of information services has been launched to help parents in Scotland find out what childcare is available in their area. The service is being rolled out across the United Kingdom, but was given a launch in Scotland, backed by the new Scottish Executive, because by the end of thisweek the whole of Scotland will be covered.
The National Childcare Information Service will give details of how much care will cost
and what hours the care is available. Scottish Minister for Children Sam Galbraith said: “Up till now, parents’ choices have been limited by lack of information on just what is available.
“This national telephone line, supported by local information services, will give parents easy access to details of cost, facilities and opening hours for everything from out-of-school clubs to childminders and nurseries in their area.”
The line provides general information and also sends callers to local helplines for details on what is available in their area. The freephone number for the information line, which is open to anyone in the UK, is:
08000 960296.
More details can also be found on a website supporting the project, located at www.childcarelink.gov.uk
