These are suitable for babies from birth onwards and provide an alternative resting
place to the cot, pram or floor. They are easy to carry from room to room. Because they
support the baby at an angle, your baby can watch you while you’re busy with chores
There are two types, cradle bouncing seats and rocking seats; both have a fixed restraint. They may have removable washable covers, and some have a head hugger cushion to give extra support for a newborn baby.
Cradle bouncing seats
These are relatively basic and inexpensive; a sturdy metal frame is covered with fabric
to make a hammock-style reclining seat in one position only. The baby’s own movement
encourages the chair to bounce gently. They are suitable for babies weighing up to 10kg
(between 7 and 9 months). You can also buy baby toys which clip onto the front of the
seat.
Rocking seats
These are a more sophisticated version of a cradle seat with firmer support and more
cushioning. They have a large padded seat, a number of recline positions and the facility
to rock, or they can be locked into a static position. They usually come with a carry
handle and may have a detachable plastic tray for food and toys. A rocking seat may also
be used as a low chair for a toddler, up to around 18 months.
