Little Pincess – Bedtime, by Tony Ross

little princess: bedtimeThis board book about a punchy princess brings out recognisable details of
life with a young child who is just beginning to establish a bit of independence. The
parents (here a Queen and King wearing a headscarf with crown and casual jacket with crown
respectively) are trying to establish their own routine, calling for bathtime at a
particular time. The princess claims that she isn’t dirty yet, so doesn’t understand the
reasoning. To make more sense of it all, she splashes in a very muddy puddle, and
continues to avoid parental rules in a totally endearing way right to the end. The
illustrations are wonderfully warm and humorous.

Follow The Line, by Pat Posner, illustrations by Claire Chrystall

follow the lineThere’s a finger trail cut into the pages of this board book,
which children are encouraged by the rhyming text to follow. First the child’s finger can
be a car driver taking a route straight home (a straight cut-out line), then the wiggly
route of a hopping bunny, and finally across the arch of a rainbow.

Mum of a ten-month-old comments: "The track is quite wide and deep, which makes it
easy for my son to keep his finger inside."
