- Use a toothpaste that is designed specifically for a baby or toddler. These contain a
lower level of fluoride, are free of abrasives and your baby is likely to prefer the mild
taste. Some brands contain artificial sweeteners and flavourings: check the ingredients if
you are concerned - Fluoride protects teeth from decay, but if children have an excess their teeth may
become discoloured. Fluoride drops or gel should only be given on the recommendation of
your dentist
