Use more embryos plea

October 4, 2000

A WOMAN is fighting to have five embryos planted in her to give her the chance to have one baby.

Helen and Howard Blackith have gone through three years of
fertility treatment, costing £13,000. Her doctor has told her the
only chance of conceiving is to have five embryos implanted.

But in the UK, no more than three embryos can be implanted, due to
the risk of a multiple pregnancy.

Mrs Blackith plans to take the case to the High Court in a bid to
get the rules changed not just for herself, but for others.

She told the BBC: “it may take a while going through
the courts, and it may be that the number of embryos does not increase
while we are still trying our IVF treatment. But for other couples in
the future, I think it is very, very important.”

The couple have said that if they fail in their bid they will
travel to the US, where there is no limit on the number of embryos
implanted.
