Nappy rash is redness and possibly soreness caused by contact with urine and faeces.
If your baby gets a sore bottom, try:
- Changing him more frequently, taking extra care to clean his skin. Let him kick on the changing mat without a nappy for as long as possible, as fresh air often helps
- Using cotton wool and water rather than baby wipes, as the lotion in the wipes may irritate sore skin
- Using a nappy cream formulated to help with nappy rash. If the one you’re using doesn’t work, try a different make
- Changing the type of nappy you are using: terry to disposable and vice versa
If the rash persists ask your health visitor or doctor for advice. Some rashes are complicated by thrush, and you may need a cream with anti-fungal ingredients, available on prescription from your doctor.
