Flowers seem to be a girl’s best friend, unless they are old, wilted and bought in desperation from a petrol station (many women said these were the worst present they had received, so men – be warned!). Just so you know, 73% of people who buy flowers for Valentine’s Day are men, while only 27% are women.
If you are going to say it with flowers this year, don’t just assume they mean ‘I love you’. Different-coloured roses have a whole array of meanings: White: innocence and purity; yellow: joy and gladness but can sometimes imply jealousy; red: I love you; pink: grace and
gentility; dark pink: gratitude and appreciation; light pink: admiration or sympathy; coral/orange (mainly given to men by women): enthusiasm and desire.

Chocolates are another favourite, except when women are on a diet! (That’s the wrong sort of temptation on Valentine’s Day…) But why are choccies so popular? Apparently the same chemicals found in chocolate can be found in marijuana, although in much smaller
quantities, and can be a fantastic aphrodisiac. However, please be a bit more imaginative and generous than flinging a Cream Egg in his/her direction, as one poor woman suffered!
Jewellery was also listed by many respondents, with engagement rings being a common gift. According to Brides magazine, around 8% of marriage proposals take place at this time of year. But nature-lovers beware: traditional superstitions say that the animals you spot
on Valentine’s Day could d etermine the character of your future mate:
- Squirrels mean you may end up marrying a cheapskate who will hoard all your money.
- Goldfinches are better – you’ll marry a millionaire!
- Look out for a flock of doves for a happy, peaceful marriage.
- If you spot a robin, you’ll marry a crime fighter (not bad if it’s Tobey Maguire as Spiderman).
Getting pregnant/delivering a baby also ranked highly and we can think of no better present to receive on the day (apart from an epidural!).
