Atopic dermatitis, often called eczema affects approximately 5 – 15% of UK school children, most frequently starting in the first year of life and almost always within the first five years.
Most children grow out of eczema, around 65% of children by the time they are seven years of age and 74% of them will be eczema-free by their 16th birthday. However, sensitive skin can be a life-long problem for some.
Seeing your child suffer with itchy eczema can be really distressing especially if the discomfort is also disrupting their sleep and therefore concentration at playgroup/school. 60% of eczematous children suffer from disturbed sleep and this rises to 83% during an eczema flare. Eczema children can be awake from 15 minutes a night to over 2 hours. It is therefore no surprise that increased eczema severity in children is associated with parental tiredness and exhaustion due to sleep disruption and also increased work absenteeism and lost productivity.
There are several ways in which to help to improve the skin condition and reduce itch:-
- Apply emollients after a lukewarm bath, while water is still trapped in the skin for extra hydration
- Apply gently in the direction of the hair growth. Never rub up and down vigorously as this could trigger itching and block hair follicles
- Keeping nails short will help to minimise any damage to the skin if your child scratches it. If your baby has atopic eczema, consider using medical grade silk gloves or a body suit with folding mittens to help prevent them scratching their skin
- All too often clothing and bedding is overlooked. Nothing is in closer contact with the skin than the clothes your baby wears so getting the clothing and bedding right could be the single most important thing you can do for your eczematous child. DermaSilk Therapeutic Clothing is made from medical grade silk

Parents of children wearing DermaSilk have reported the following benefits within 7 days:-
- Less Itching and Scratching
- Better Sleep Patterns
- Improved attention span
- Less emollient usage
- Uninterrupted sleep for Mum and Dad!
In addition to this DermaTherapy Therapeutic Bedding has been developed especially for people suffering with dry and sensitive skin. It is the only bedding to be approved by the FDA as a Class 1 Medical Device, it is dust mite proof and also has an antimicrobial physically bonded onto the material.
AND THERE’S MORE:-
For all breastfeeding Mums out there we also have a DermaSilk bra liner to ease the discomfort of cracked nipples. The bra liner helps regulate the mother’s skin temperature in the breast area and the permanently bonded antimicrobial also helps reduce the number of microbes living on the skin. I am sure many Mums would prefer to wear a silk bra to alleviate cracked sore nipples rather than actually applying creams/ointments to the affected area.
