Baby swimming has grown in popularity over the last decade and today, thousands of young children all over the world take to the water each week.  It may seem a little surprising that so many mums and dads introduce their children to water so young but it makes perfect sense! Having spent the first nine months of their lives suspended in fluid in the womb, babies generally love the liberating sensation of floating freely in warm water as it’s such a familiar environment.

There are many mental, physical and emotional benefits of baby swimming so we’ve asked the experts at Water Babies to share some with us…

Mum swimming her babyBabies can exercise many more muscles in the water than they can on land, and amazingly can swim short distances underwater aided, even from when they are tiny. Sessions in the pool are great for strengthening arm, leg and neck muscles, as well as being superb for tiny lungs and cardiovascular fitness. With recent Government guidelines stating that under five year olds should be doing at least three hours of exercise per day, baby swimming allows a gentle and fun introduction to physical activity, setting them up perfectly for an active lifestyle as they get older.

Regular swimming classes will not only make your baby fitter and stronger in the water, you will also notice the difference in their physical ability on land – where regular swimmers have often been shown to crawl and walk earlier than their peers.

Finding an activity that both you and your baby both adore means each class will be about having fun and spending time together while teaching baby a life-saving skill.

Teaching water confidence and safety from birth, the unique Water Babies programme is designed to make the most of babies’ natural affinity with water. With progressive training, babies can be taught life-saving skills while specialist techniques see many swimming short distances from as young as 30 months.

Water Babies teaches over 26,000 babies and children to swim each week. Each lesson lasts 30 minutes and, with a clear emphasis on having fun, they’re generally very sociable occasions and a great way of making friends.
