Special care baby charity Bliss provides support and advice to families of premature and sick babies throughout the UK at what is an extremely difficult and stressful time. With one in nine babies born each year in the UK needing specialist hospital care there are many parents who need Bliss’ support.
We work with hospitals to ensure that parents receive the information they need at this time and we distribute our free Bliss Family Handbook to help answer some of their questions and give them reassurance that they’re not alone.
The handbook is not just for mum’s but for the whole family as each member plays an important role in ensuring the very best care is given for the most vulnerable members of the family. It contains sections such as Getting your bearings (on the neonatal unit), About neonatal care, Your baby’s medical care, Home time and bereavement. There is information in these sections and others about support during this emotional time, family-centred care, your finances, pain relief and much, much more. Each section has its own colour coded index tab to make all this information easy to find. And, it comes in an A5 size booklet which is easy to carry around and refer to whenever needed.
Carmel Bartley, Bliss Family Support Manager said, “Bliss is here to make sure families are supported at what is a very emotional and stressful time in their lives. The Family Handbook is just one way that we do this. It is available for any parents of preterm or sick babies admitted to neonatal care from the unit, or through Bliss. It is also available in several other languages including Polish and French and available to download from our website.”
Bliss provides a range of support publications for families of premature and sick babies, all are available to download from our website at www.bliss.org.uk or by calling our freephone family support helpline on 0500 618 140.
