Question: Weight problem affecting fertility

Q: “I have a weight problem. I had difficulties becoming pregnant with my first child, but when I lost weight, I fell pregnant. Why I am having the same problem again? I have not used any precautions for years. Why does weight stop ovulation? Please help.”

A: Being too fat can certainly reduce fertility as female hormones are converted into male hormones in fat tissue and this can reduce the chances of ovulation and increase the risk of miscarriage. There is also a very common condition, which you may have, known as polycystic ovaries, which leads to subfertility and obesity. Losing weight is one of the most difficult things to do but if you can do it you will not only be more fertile but you will be healthier during your pregnancy.
