Not sure if this is pregnancy related but I woke up early hours on Friday with a crampy feeling in right side of stomach and top of right thigh. My stomach is ok now but my thigh is still sore. I’ve read baby can sit on nerve but is this the case at 18 weeks [...]

Hi Rachel, Congratulations on your pregnancy. Slapped cheek syndrome / parvovirus B19 / fifth disease is a common infection in children and causes a characteristic red rash on the face, so it is often called ‘slapped cheek disease’. Around 60% of women are actually already immune to this infection, having previously had it in the [...]

Hi, I’m currently around 6-7 weeks pg (waiting for 2nd dating scan to confirm exact date). I work in a school at lunchtimes and am aware they have recently had an outbreak of Slap cheek. As far as I know the last case was a couple of weeks before I became pg. What are the [...]

Hi Lucykirby, Sorry to hear you have gastroenteritis. The best thing you can be doing is giving her your breastmilk as this will help her immune system. Having minimal contact with your daughter as much as possible can help to limit the chance of her catching it but it’s difficult to say how long your [...]

Hi, yesterday afternoon I came down with gastroenteritis. I’m worried about my six week old catching it so I’ve quarantined myself and had my husband and my mum looking after her. I stopped vomiting yesterday but I’ve still had diarrhoea today. I’ve been expressing milk for my daughter as normal. My question is an I [...]

Hi Lucykirby, If your daughter is feeding on request and lets you know when she wants a feed, is generally well and gaining weight, then there’s no harm in letting her sleep through the night at this stage if this is what she wants to do. Keep in mind that as she grows she will [...]

Hi amber, My daughter is six week old and has just started to sleep longer at night, last night she slept through from 10pm to around 5am this morning when she started stirring so I woke her up to feed her. I’ve read somewhere that you shouldn’t let newborns sleep for longer than six hours [...]

Hi Nikin, Congratulations on your pregnancy! Sorry to hear you’re having a scary time. It sounds like you may have an ovarian cyst. Ovarian cysts are actually quite common in pregnancy. After ovulation, a body of cells called a corpus luteum is formed. This body of cells produces oestrogen and progesterone and disappears after 14 [...]

amberbwmidwife posted on the forum topic phenylalanine in the group Ask our Midwife: 3 weeks, 3 days ago · View
Hi Loopylau, The overall opinion is that most women during pregnancy can safely consume sweeteners such as aspartame, sucralose and saccharin, when used in moderation. These sugar substitutes are used in many different types of food and drink and are not considered to be harmful. Aspartame is composed of two amino acids, phenylalanine and aspartic [...]

Hi Maria1234, As migraines with auras are common for you and you recognised your symptoms as one yesterday, and it responded to your usual treatment, then it’s unlikely that it’s a sign of anything more sinister. It’s quite possible that it was hormone related although it could have just been a coincidence. Either way, hopefully [...]

Hi Amber, Just wondering if phenylaline and other artificial sweeteners are safe to consume in pregnancy. I have been consuming phenylaline in the squash that i have been drinking for a while now. I am struggling to find appropriate information/research on the web so I thought I’d ask for your professional knowledge on this subject. [...]
