repeat c section or vbac?! (3 posts)

I am almost 23 weeks with my second baby.
I had an emergency section with my daughter, who is 7 in June this year. With her I was fully dilated and pushing but she wouldn’t budge and became distressed, they attempted a ventouse but even after pushing for some time she was still too high up. She was 8lb 11oz at 39 weeks and it was suggested that maybe the opening in my pelvis was too small, however nothing has been said about it since.
I remember feeling very intimidated and terrified during the whole experience and have always said since that if I were to have another I would opt for a ELCS as the thought of going through it again petrifies me! However when I went for my scan at 21 weeks and saw the consultant afterwards he just assumed I would be opting for a VBAC. I tried to explain to him that the thought of a VBAC scared the living daylights out of me and would rather have a c section, and I felt he wasn’t listening to a word I said and just kept giving me reasons I should have a VBAC. I told him I had read that as I had group B strep with my daughter a section reduces the risk of infection,he told me this was not true and the risk of group B strep infection was greater with a section. He then refused to discuss it more until my next appointment with him at 26 weeks.
It has caused me a lot of anxiety since and I feel on the verge of a panic attack just thinking about it! I understand the risks with both a VBAC and section, but really feel that my fear would hold me back in a VBAC and is really starting to affect my ability to enjoy the rest of my pregnancy.
    What are my options?
    (sorry for the long post)

    Hanna.

    Hi Hanna,

So sorry to hear you feel like this and the obstetrician didn’t seem to want to discuss it further with you. You should be able to choose between a VBAC or an elective caesarean, but it can depend on the consultant you see/hospital you are under. There have been a few threads on here before that you should find helpful:

You may also find the new NICE caesarean guidelines helpful, which recommend that you should have a choice of a VBAC or elective caesarean: http://www.nice.org.uk/nicemedia/live/13620/57163/57163.pdf
