Review:
We have had one of the these gates at the top of the stairs and one at the bottom for about a year now. Yes, they can be fiddly to open at first one-handed. Patience is the key thing though – once you get the hang of this gate it is very easy to open and close, even one-handed holding a wriggly toddler. I actually find the traditional gate at my parents’ house harder to manage now, particularly while standing on the stairs and having to swing it.
An advantage of this gate for us is that due to the design of our house at both the top and bottom of the stairs we would have found it nearly impossible to fit a traditional gate. Due to this gate not requiring parallel walls we were able to do it easily at the top of the stairs, with the “blind” itself on a wall at 90 degrees to the hooks, and with a minimum of alteration at the bottom. (Extra wooden block fitted to post at bottom of stairs.) The gate folds away and there is nothing to trip over, unlike a traditional gate.
We have low skirting boards at the top of the stairs, so just fitted the gate slightly above it, which was ok, although you can buy an accessory for the top fixing so that you are able to fit the gate to skirting, and had I realised that accessory existed I would probably have . Our sons still couldn’t get under it even though it was slightly higher off the ground (and they tried!).
Another advantage of the gate is the additional hooks – we will fit some so that we can block the entrance to our daughter’s room as well as the stairs as this will be needed when we’re at a stage of her moving out of her cot.
The only disadvantages that we have found are both easily solved. The mechanism makes a heck of a noise, which is great for alerting you if the gate is being undone, but not so great if your children are sleeping. However, it’s easy enough to stop this, just hold the button down as you open the gate.
