    Short Title: Expectations not met
    Review:
I have been a bit confused with this monitor. Samsung are such a strong brand leader in the technology market that my expectations were high. They were not met.

The monitor was easy to set up and to use, with a clear instruction booklet and a ‘quick start’ guide. On taking the camera and handset out of the box, I was immediately struck by the relatively poor build quality. The camera is robust enough, but the handset has misaligned buttons and a very breakable antennae. The picture quality is pretty good though and I was able to receive a picture wherever I was in the house and garden. Time precluded me from testing the range. There is a talk button on the handset which enabled me to talk to the camera location – the voice quality from the camera’s speaker was poor.

Likewise, although the monitor has three lullabies, the sound quality is such that I would not use them with my baby. The sound echoes and, again, is ‘tinny’. The monitor works on movement which, whilst suitable for security, was not enough for me with a baby. It was lovely seeing her move, but I want to be able to hear her, and this did not seem possible with the Samsung. I was surprised by this seemingly obvious lack of capability. I want to know what sort of cry it is, so that I can react accordingly (feed me some more, change my pants, leave me to holler as I am just about to fall asleep…etc). The handset registers that it has located movement through two alarm types – a beep, or a vibration. Regardless of the sensitivity setting (on the camera), both are quite irritating. Every time it vibrated (for me, the least irritating of the two options), I checked the screen and yes, she was still waving at me! Or, of course, there was no movement at all. Now that’s sensitive. The battery life of the handset was good and the display has all the information you might want – time, temperature, battery life, range. The handset is also very light, so easy to carry about the house. It took a little while to work out that there was not the ability to hear my baby cry – as a result, I did not utilise the computer software that came with the monitor in order to check on my baby remotely.

All in all, a disappointing monitor from a technology giant. For our first child, we had a cheap monitor (certainly no video) in which I would still place more trust than in this. I would use this for general security whilst away from home and it is a good enough option for travel purposes with a child, but it would not be my first choice for a permanent monitor, for a baby, in the home.
